Freeroll Blitz 2025 – Full Recap

Date: Friday 18 July 2025

Location: Gold Coast Chess Club

Time Control: 3+2 Blitz • QJ Rated

The Stakes

With three major events on the horizon — the Blitz, Rapid, and Lecture of the Arianne Caoili Memorial — players battled for freeroll entry tickets. Only GCCC members were eligible to claim the prizes:

  • 🥇 1st Prize: Full Bundle (Blitz + Rapid + Lecture)

  • 🥈 2nd Prize: Double Ticket (Blitz + Lecture or Rapid)

  • 🥉 3rd Prize: Single Ticket (Blitz or Lecture)

The Final Standings

Outright winner Adam Vagg dominated the field with an exceptional 8/9. He kept a perfect score until round five and remained undefeated through nine rounds. A clean, clinical performance that left no doubt — a well-earned 1st Place finish.

Four players tied on 5.5 points:

  • Morgan Lawson

  • Peter Lucas

  • Orsen Van Der Byl

  • Lyndon Cerfonteyn

On countback, Morgan edged out Peter and Orsen for second place, with Peter claiming third.

Major Upsets and Standouts

The tournament saw several upsets and impressive moments. Most notably, Hanish Chilekampalli stunned the crowd with a sharp combination to defeat Darwin Huang, flipping the expected result on its head. The game was a highlight of the event — a great reminder that anything can happen in blitz.

Another surprise came in Round 1, when Lyndon Cerfonteyn scored a dramatic upset over Louis Yang, toppling a player rated over 1000 points higher.

Several newer players held their own against more experienced opponents, showing that the next generation of club talent is well on its way.
